Among the works of great value presented at Cambi Casa d’Aste’s appointment on 27 February 2023 dedicated to 20th-century Glasses and Ceramics, the iridescent transparent crystal glass sculpture depicting a face, created by Egidio Costantini of La Fucina degli Angeli glassworks based on a design by Max Ernst in 1968, stands out.
An unusual human face characterised by a red eye, a blue eye and a stylised mouth perfectly expresses the artistic language of the artist, one of the leading exponents of Surrealism. In fact, the sculpture’s irrational features seem to come out of a dream and the unconscious, like a character animated by the psyche and not the concrete universe.
Egidio Costantini’s Fucina degli Angeli, founded in 1950 in Murano, is known for having introduced numerous artists to the art of glassmaking. From Marc Chagall and Oskar Kokoschka to Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp and many others. The works were created at the time by the best masters, such as Aldo Bon (Polo), Archimede Seguso, Angelo Tosi and Ermanno Nason, and were often presented at the Venice Biennale and in important international exhibitions, consecrating La Fucina degli Angeli and its founder among the great names of artistic glassmaking on the planet.
Coming from a private Italian collection, the work is accompanied by the authentication of the glassworks and earns the cover of the auction catalogue.
From Thursday 23 February to Sunday 26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the public can visit the exhibition, which can also be viewed via an online catalogue.
